South Central Indiana is a hub for quarrying and distributing this stone throughout the United States.
Limestone is a rock mainly formed of calcium carbonate. It was deposited over 300 millions of years as sea fossils decayed at the bottom of an ancient shallow sea which covered the majority of the today's Midwest of the United States. During the last Ice Age around 10 000 years ago, enormous glaciers slid south over Southwestern Indiana and uncovered a little area of the prehistoric base between Bloomington and Bedford, Indiana but just in the early nineteenth-century, large-scale quarrying operations began. Since that period quarrying of limestone in large scale is constantly expanding.
Most of the prominent structures including state and local capitals, memorials or national monument are build using this stone from Indiana, that's why it is known as the "The Nation's Building Stone"
The biggest projects in the US include The Pentagon, Lincoln Memorial, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Biltmore Estate, Grand Central Station, Tribune Tower, Monument Circle, Flatiron Building, Chicago Public Library, Metropolitan Museum of Art and many others.
